I am excited to announce that one of my projects for Feminist Disability Studies (WMST 495) is now on display in Diehn Center for the Performing Arts at Old Dominion University. The project is a 30 day calendar spotlighting and celebrating various disabled dancers and choreographers, as well as dance companies, studios, and organizations that center disability in dance.
The focus for this project was emphasizing intersectionality, accessibility, and the continual revision of dance media, spaces, and works and the ways disability exist within them and influence them. My research helped me find so many incredible disabled dancers, disabled choreographers, and organizations who center disability in their practice and pedagogy, and the most incredible part is being able to share this all with other dancers at Old Dominion, as well as the greater Old Dominion community.
I like to say a special thank you to Dr. Ruth Osorio, Dance Department Director Megan Thompson, Professor Kate Mattingly, and the Old Dominion University dance department for helping bring this display to life and supporting disability in the arts. I'd also like to thank the Old Dominion Women Studies department for showcasing my project on their Instagram, @oduwomensstudies.
The calendar is expected to stay on display until May 2023.
